VH-UHW de Havilland D.H.61 Giant
Moth
(c/n 330)
This Giant Moth was earmarked for, and registered to, Airgold, Ltd of
Sydney in November
1928.
It was named 'Canberra'.
In the
event it
was seriously damaged in a landing accident
at
Cowes, Victoria on 9 December 1928
and never accepted by Airgold. It was re-registered
instead
to the manufacturer, de Havilland
Aircraft Pty Ltd in South Melbourne. It was acquired
by Les
Holden early in 1929 and used by
his Holden's Air Transport Services Ltd in New
Guinea.
The photo above is from the Mac
Job collection, via the CAHS, possibly at
Melbourne. The
image at the foot of the page in an almost identical profile is
from the Daryl
Mackenzie collection,
and
shows -UHW in New Guinea in the early
1930s. It crashed at Kaiapit, New
Guinea on
2 November 1934 and was destroyed by the
resultant fire. The rather uncontrasty image immed-
iately below is from the Alan J. Sheppard
collection and shows 'Canberra'
at what is thought to
be
the original aerodrome
site at south Casino,
NSW
